The International Society for CNS Clinical Trials and Methodology (ISCTM) is a multi-disciplinary independent organization devoted to promoting advances in clinical research methods and addressing strategic clinical, regulatory, methodological, and policy challenges that arise in the development and use of CNS therapeutic agents. This work is accomplished through partnership with leaders in academia, CNS clinical research, government, policy-making, and the public. This year, the ISCTM’s scientific conference, the 17th Annual Scientific Meeting, was held virtually due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Taking place from April 6th to April 9th, 2021, the Annual Scientific Meeting featured speakers from a wide range of scientific and medical focus areas, including Koneksa researchers. Koneksa presented new research on digital clinical measures in Parkinson’s disease (PD) in the form of a poster, “Feature Development of Digital Measures for the Finger Tapping Task,” which described a method that researchers used to determine scoring features for a digital endpoint. The study examines the utility of digital hand dexterity tests in measuring symptom severity and offers insights valuable in developing and validating algorithms for digital measures.

The data used in this analysis was collected as part of the mPower study, one of the first to use a smartphone to assess disease symptoms through a set of tasks in which the patient moves or touches the phone, offering researchers data from the phone screen, gyroscope, and accelerometer.

Koneksa has previously presented data related to the development and validation of digital endpoints for neurodegenerative conditions. During the 2020 ISCTM Annual Scientific Meeting, Koneksa presented “Development of an Algorithm for the Evaluation of Gait and Balance Impairments in CNS Disorders,” which described the analytical validation and operational tolerance of an algorithm used as part of a digital endpoint and its value in future CNS studies.

Koneksa has also presented at other recent medical conferences, including the MDS Congress. The International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS) annual conference features medical professionals from around the world who are dedicated to researching Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders. At the MDS 2020 Virtual Congress, Koneksa presented “Comparison of Accelerometers Used for Measurement of Upper Body Postural Tremor, and Gait and Balance,” which included sensor verification and analysis of phone-based and wrist-worn accelerometer devices.
