Why Combining Sensors, Not Just Adding More of Them, Is the Next Step for Home Monitoring
Wearable and biometric monitoring technologies (BioMeTs) have already earned a place in the healthcare community’s toolkit, thanks to user-friendly form factors and multi-sensor data collection. But a review published in Maturitas, co-authored by researchers from Byteflies, Northumbria University, Case Western Reserve University, and Koneksa Health, argues that the real opportunity now lies less in device availability and more in how well multiple sensor modalities can be integrated into fit-for-purpose clinical applications.
What the Review Identifies
- Availability isn’t the bottleneck anymore: The authors note that device availability is no longer the primary factor limiting adoption of remote monitoring, the real challenge is integrating fit-for-purpose BioMeTs reliably and safely into clinical care.
- The multimodal advantage: Multimodal BioMeTs unlock the ability to generate rich contextual data that augments digital measures, offering benefits across therapeutic areas and both chronic and acute disease settings.
- Three unmet clinical needs: The review identifies specific gaps the field still needs to address: expanding the capabilities of existing ambulatory single-modality BioMeTs; adapting standardized in-clinic test protocols (“spot checks”) for use under free-living, everyday conditions; and developing novel applications for rehabilitation and chronic disease management.
- Three practical recommendations: In response, the authors recommend selecting appropriate BioMeTs for a given use case, developing composite digital measures that combine multiple data streams, and designing interoperable software capable of ingesting, processing, and visualizing multimodal data for novel clinical applications.
Where This Leaves Home-Based Clinical Assessment
This review frames a clear trajectory for the field: multimodal BioMeTs will drive the shift from in-clinic assessments to at-home data collection, with a focus on prevention, personalization, and long-term outcomes. That shift depends on treating multimodal integration, not simply device proliferation, as the central engineering and clinical challenge still to be solved.
